HAPPY JULY 4th from Our Uncle and the Captain!

Happy 4th of July! In honor of this holiday, I thought we could take a closer look at two of America’s greatest icons, Uncle Sam and Captain America. Both show off the stars and stripes in red, white, and blue, but they did not become beloved because of their visual designs, but because of the history that makes them American!

In the Beginning…

The United States was founded by people from different parts of the world, and both our American Heroes reflect a similar background. Uncle Sam was based on Samuel Wilson who was a second-generation Scottish immigrant. Steve Rogers, the civilian name for Captain America, was written as a second-generation Irish immigrant. While they were born around 100 years apart, you will find that Samuel and Steve have plenty in common!

The Honor to Protect and Serve

Samuel and Steve both answered the calling to serve their country through the United States Army. Both men were considered physically weak, and were not placed in combat. But, theese two underdogs never gave up, and rallied to embrace their best skills!

Steve had the heart of a true patriot, which was why he was chosen for the Super Soldier program. His  superpowers did not define him, but his belief in what is right, did. Even before he had superpowers, he would do everything to protect everyone, which is why his weapon has always been a shield.

Samuel became well known for taking care of cattle and feeding the troops. He used these skills after leaving the military to grow a very successful meat packing business. Through his company, he would continue to serve soldiers with quality meats. The famous illustration of Uncle Sam pointing his finger straight ahead with the words, “I want YOU for the U.S.Army Enlist now”  motivated future generations to continue to be patriotic and work together. Maybe that’s why on July 4th, everyone likes to grill meat to celebrate!

However you decide to enjoy the day, we wish you the best and Happy July 4th!
