L is for the Lovely Lemon

I always love to add a bit of lemon to my food and beverages! With little to no calories it alone can provide me with 1/3rd of the daily Vitamin C that I need. There are times when I am shopping for groceries and I find bottled lemon juice. My first instinct is to pick it over fresh lemons because it saves a small amount of time. But often the juice can lose up to 39% of its vitamin C value as well as diminishing its other healthy nutrients including calcium. A little extra work when having to pick the seeds out your fresh lemons can really pay off!

Many people may know that Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), found in abundance in lemons, helps with healing and is essential in the maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue, and cartilage. But what you may not know is that lemons can also help those who suffer from kidney stones! By adding lemons to your diet, the citric acid is a wonderful preventative that constantly breaks up the minerals that create the stones in your body. Having to deal with pain that rivals child birth is something that we could all live without and a simple lemon a day can keep the pain away!

When looking at the beauty benefits of Lemons and Vitamin C, it is a warrior against free radical damage. Free radical damage — especially as caused by UV exposure and environmental toxins — is responsible for many symptoms of aging. The antioxidant intake found in lemons can help offset this damage and minimize your wrinkles! In addition, lemon juice can be applied topically to scars and age spots to help reduce their appearance too!
